Driscoll’s Celebrates International Waffle Day on March 25

Driscoll’s, the nation’s leading provider of fresh berries, went undercover to collect waffle intelligence to celebrate International Waffle Day, March 25th, a holiday that originated in Sweden where it is called Våffeldagen.

While waffles may be a bit less popular than their battered brethren pancakes, we happen to love them. 82% of those surveyed enjoy waffles at least a few times a year. Waffles are as functional as they are tasty. After all, maple syrup and butter aren’t going anywhere once deposited into their tiny waffle cubicles. While most waffle lovers use syrup, more than 37% surveyed chose berries to top off their waffle.

When asked in which city people would prefer to eat their waffles, Paris was the winner with New York City coming in a close second. Interestingly, no one mentioned Brussels. And with whom would most people like to share their waffles? Julia Child bested Elvis, Marilyn Monroe and James Dean. Did they think Julia would be making the waffles, as well?

So in honor of International Waffle Day, we encourage you to find a lovely breakfast venue, order a heaping helping of waffles, pile on the berries and share the bounty with someone special. Or if you’re fortunate enough to own a waffle iron, try this delightful recipe made with delicious Driscoll’s blueberries.

Gingerbread Waffles with Blueberry Orange Sauce
Prep time: 15 minutes
Cook time: 15 minutes
Makes 4 (9-inch waffles) each having four sections

Blueberry Orange Sauce
1 package (6 ounce) Driscoll’s blueberries
1/2 cup orange juice
1 tablespoon sugar
2 teaspoons cornstarch

Blueberry Gingerbread Waffles
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 large eggs
3/4 cup milk
2 tablespoons butter, melted
1 package (6 ounce) Driscoll’s blueberries

Blueberry Orange Sauce
Combine blueberries, orange juice, sugar and cornstarch in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat; boil 1 minute, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and keep warm until ready to serve.

Gingerbread Waffles
Stir flour, brown sugar, baking powder, ginger, cinnamon, cloves and salt in a medium bowl until combined.

Whisk in eggs, milk and butter until smooth. Stir in blueberries. Pour 1 cup batter onto center of greased waffle maker. Bake about 5 minutes or until steaming stops. Remove carefully.
