Holidays for Night Owls

Iceland, Norway (PRUnderground) February 27th, 2013

There are astronomy holidays in which the main event happens in the daytime, and there are those for which only night-time hours will do.

Eclipses, by their very nature, occur only in the daytime but most astronomical observations require dark skies.  Stars, meteor showers and aurora are all best observed from a location that is not only dark, but where the night is of a reasonable length.  It is no good travelling to a high latitude country to see the northern lights in June for example, when the sun barely sets.

Situated at latitude that just reaches the Arctic Circle, one country that has very dark skies and long nights during the winter months is Iceland.  Northern Lights holidays are often taken there as Iceland’s position beneath the auroral oval combined with its dark skies and long night’s means that there are many hours in which there is the possibility of catching a glimpse of the lights.

The northern lights can become active and visible at any time of the night, and that sometimes means staying up very late if you want to see them at their best.   The northern lights can build up very gradually over a matter of hours; it would be a shame to turn in for the night only to miss the best part of the show.
