High Demands for Smoke Alarms To Be 'Mandatory' In Properties
Recent high demands for mandatory smoke alarms is gaining more support
Kent, England (PRUnderground) May 9th, 2014
A recent soar in demands for mandatory smoke alarms and a 10-minute rule Bill by Nick Raynsford, former fire minister and MP in Parliament, has now gained the support of South Yorkshire MP John Healey.
John Healey sponsored the 10 minute Bill stating that on average one in five rental properties do not have a smoke detector installed for the safety of tenants.
It seems that more privately owned rental properties fail to have a smoke alarm installed when compared to owned properties.
‘“Private rented homes are more likely to be without a smoke alarm than social or owned houses,’ says Mr Healy.
“It’s a simple, life-saving measure.’
‘Without a smoke alarm, you are four times more likely to die in a fire. It’s a matter of life and death.’
Mr. Shaddock from Alarm Traders Direct supports the comments surrounding the bill and refuses to accept the Government referring to the idea of making it mandatory for all properties to have a smoke alarm installed as a ‘regulatory burden.’
Mr. Shaddock continues to say: ‘ A smoke alarm can cost as little as £15 and can save endless lives.’
‘To make it a ‘mandatory’ measure for renting a property shouldn’t even be a debate’
“If it means that all rental properties have a smoke detector installed for the safety of tenants then it should be done.’
‘No landlord would like to hear that their property is on fire so at the end of the day it will also ensure that the rental property owners will also protect their properties and the lives in it.’
Labour aims for the Secretary of State to ‘lay an order’ to bring in the rule by January 2015.
