Gaylord Rockies Hotel Prepares for Construction Despite Controversy says Construction Reporter

Industry: Real Estate

The hotel could attract up to 450,000 new visitors to the state annually, produce a new economic benefit of $273 million annually, and create over 2,500 permanent jobs.

Colorado (PRUnderground) June 18th, 2015

Storm water and erosion control work has begun on the controversial hotel project, but there is “nothing vertical yet,” and there is not set date for actual construction, according to Mortenson Construction senior marketing and communications manager. The project would generate an estimated 10,000 jobs and be completed within 3 years of the start date.

The Gaylord Rockies Hotel would be built near the Denver International Airport and be the largest project of its kind in Colorado history.  The largest hotel in Colorado presently is the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel, with 1225 rooms.  The Gaylord would house 1500, as well as an indoor/outdoor water park and an atrium offering a view of the Rocky Mountains.

The controversy surrounding the project centers on two incentive packages provided for the hotel, one of which was declared unconstitutional by an Adams County Judge, as it did not receive required voter approval for the tax increases supposedly authorized during an earlier election related to the project.  The City of Aurora appealed the ruling to the Colorado Supreme Court, which has not yet made its decision.
