You may not have been aware that the Forest of Dean has acted as the inspiration for some of the best works of British literature ever produced.

Forest of Dean (PRUnderground) July 5th, 2013

It is no surprise that cottage breaks in the Forest of Dean have been such a popular getaway choice for so long, with this beautiful part of Gloucestershire known as being one of the most picturesque wooded areas in the whole of the UK. You may not have been aware, however, that the forest has also acted as the inspiration for some of the best works of British literature ever produced, too.

The authoress of the phenomenally successful Harry Potter series, J. K. Rowling, actually lived in the southern part of the Forest of Dean for around a decade when she was a child and teenager, and the mysterious, enchanting nature of the spot clearly remained with her when she began writing her internationally best-selling novels. The forest plays a major part in the last book of the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and several scenes of the franchise’s films were also shot in the Puzzlewood area.

Speaking of Puzzlewood, it is thought that this particular spot was also what gave J. R. R. Tolkien the idea for his Middle-earth fictional universe in which the classic Lord of the Rings was set. As amazing as it seems, you will find upon visiting one of the many holiday homes in the Forest of Dean that this notion is not so fanciful; a truly stunning piece of countryside, it won’t take much exploring to think that you have stumbled into a fantasy world by mistake!
