Exmoor is to feature prominently in a TV documentary this weekend and residents of the moor are looking forward to seeing the spotlight shone on their turf.

The moor will be featured heavily in a profile of Hope Bourne which is to be aired on the BBC’s Countryfile this Sunday evening, and owner of Duddings County Cottages in Dunster, Richard Tilke, says he’s pleased to see Exmoor and Hope Bourne getting the recognition they deserve.

Hope Bourne, who died at the age of 91 in 2010, was a well-known colourful character on the moor and first became famous for her work as an author and illustrator.

She published four books about life on Exmoor and spent years living a self-sufficient life in a caravan in a remote corner of Exmoor. Not only did she grow her own food but hope also collected wood and went out hunting and shooting for her dinner.

The Countryfile profile has been filmed because Hope is to be remembered at the new base of the Exmoor Society, which she helped set up, in Dulverton.

Richard says that’s great news.

“Hope Bourne was a popular character around Exmoor and she’s been missed since she died,” he said.

“It’s nice to see her getting some recognition, and by association Exmoor.

“Hope loved Exmoor’s wildness, solitude and beauty and the way it changed through all the seasons, which is why everyone who lives on the moor loves living here.

“It’s something that keeps bringing people to our Exmoor holiday cottages year after year.

“I’ll be glued to the TV on Sunday for Countryfile and I’m sure many other Exmoor folk will too.”
