Dr. Harouni Warns Sugars in Healthy Diet are Dangerous for Your Teeth

Industry: Healthcare

Hidden sugars cause high acidity levels in your mouth and lead to tooth decay.

Nevada, United States (PRUnderground) June 1st, 2015

Although an increasing number of people is adopting a healthier lifestyle, many of them are still unaware of the destructive power of sugars that are hidden in foods and drinks often marketed as healthy and organic. If you have an active lifestyle and exercise often, you may drink sports drink to keep hydrated. However, these drinks are full of sugar and cause high acidity levels. Smoothies and fruit juices are also full of sugars, even though they might be better than a can of soda. If you do not keep your juice intake in check, a visit to the dentist could reveal early signs of tooth decay.

“Many people are surprised when they come for a regular checkup and discover a new cavity or signs of tooth decay”, says Dr. George Harouni. “When I ask them about their lifestyle, one thing that most frequently comes up is a worryingly high daily intake of sugar in their food and juices. So I advise these patients to rethink their diet and reduce their sugar.”

Fruit juices are not the only culprit of tooth decay associated with the active and healthy lifestyle. Protein and energy bars commonly contain honey or syrup, which makes them stick to your teeth and cause plaque buildup. Dried fruits also have very high concentrations of sugar.

“If you run or jog, sip on water instead”, Dr. Harouni recommends. “Be aware that your healthy smoothie or a protein bar tastes sweet and contains sugar. Consume your fruits at meal times and always brush your teeth after a sugary meal.”

Dr. Harouni advises a healthy and balanced diet consisting of fruits and vegetables is the best protection for oral health. However, it will not protect you from acidity caused by sugars. In that respect, good oral hygiene habits such as brushing and flossing are essential to keep your teeth healthy and prevent tooth decay.
