Brooklyn Vindhya Yoga turned its attention in May to a global challenge. After a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal on the morning of April 25, causing severe damage and loss of life across the small nation, the yoga school leapt into action.

“Our goal was to mobilize our community to donate as much aid as possible, as quickly as possible,” says Master Instructor Claudia Debs.

“Yoga serves to aid us during moments of crises in our day-to-day lives,” she says, “so finding a way to help those in crisis – even across the world – makes intuitive sense to us. And because of our particular method of yoga, our students were ready to extend their practice in this way.”

Brooklyn Vindhya Yoga holds an impressive resume of charitable giving throughout the years and even makes it a element of the curriculum, along with an emphasis on a healthier, saner community for adults and children it serves.

The yoga school teamed up with its associates at Brooklyn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Gene Dunn’s Karate to maximize the results of the effort.

“We have a collaborative mindset here which makes it much easier for to coordinate our communities to serve not just local needs, but global ones as well,” says Debs.

Together, they chose to collect donations all across Brooklyn on behalf of Save the Children, which had a team of 400 already active in the region. Save the Children also provided urgent needs such as food, clean water and shelter, as well as support for assessment and search and rescue teams in the initial phase of the disaster.

Debs concludes, “We have the chance to inspire our students, colleagues and friends to engage with the principles they practice in a new way – and in the service of others. To know we were able to help an organization like Save the Children and to extend that effort from Brooklyn all the way to Nepal is very rewarding. It’s what Brooklyn Vindhya Yoga is all about.”
