Brooklyn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu recruited its students and the local community to come together during the month of July to in support of Hour Children, which helps incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women and their children successfully rejoin their communities.

The martial arts organization focuses a large part of its programs to developing success skills for children, and saw a chance to work on a much larger level with this partnership.

“Brooklyn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu’s curriculum educates families on bully prevention, “stranger danger”, and other life skills like focus and confidence,” says instructor James Noto. “When we realized that we could also make a deep impact on often-overlooked local families who need a little different type of support, we were all in.”

Each month, the network of schools selects a charity to work with and gives 100% of the profits and goods they collect during their donation drive to their charity partner.

“Our tradition is to conduct a donation-based service event across our schools to bring our students together to make a direct contribution to a local charity,” says instructor Jason Lynch of BBJJ Myrtle Avenue.

Hour Children provides services and support to help reunify women with their families, and build healthy, independent and secure lives. In partnering with Hour Children, Brooklyn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu helps to fulfill its mission to support and empower adults and children, on and off the mat.

“We appreciate these schools’ efforts to collect clothing and household items for Hour Children,” says Rob Zopf of HourChildren. “Donations like these become an important part of enabling families to reunite and build independent lives.”
