Air freshener scent won’t beat visit to Exmoor for freshness

Business owners in Exmoor say a new air freshener scented like the national park will never challenge a trip to the area to experience the atmosphere.

A deal has been signed for a leading air freshener company to create a new fragrance which mimics the smell of Exmoor’s fresh air, but many people who live in the national park say that will be near to impossible.
Exmoor is one of the most stunning parts of the West, with windswept hills plunging into the sea – so it’s no surprise Air Wick wants to bring that feeling of the wild to people’s homes.
The deal, signed by Air Wick and Exmoor National park authorities, will see the brand create an ‘Exmoor’ air freshener which will be sold in supermarkets across the UK.
It forms part of an attempt by the UK’s National Park authorities, of which there are 15, to christen the parks “Britain’s breathing spaces”.
Many local business owners and residents of Exmoor are flattered by the move, but also find it a little amusing.
Richard Tilke runs Duddings Country Cottages in Dunster, a development of 13 luxury self-catering cottages in the heart of the National Park.
“It’s very flattering that Air Wick want to take the smell of Exmoor and can it,” he said.
“The air around here is so clear and fresh it’s wonderful being able to breathe it in all year – and I just don’t see how that can be replicated by something that comes out of an aerosol.
“There’s no comparison between visiting our Exmoor holiday cottages to enjoy the countryside for yourself and spraying a bit of scent around your home, wherever it may be.”
The move has prompted amusement in some quarters too.
Richard said: “It has been the source of laughter because these people from Air Wick can’t believe Exmoor always smells wonderful.
“It’s wild and open countryside, so sometimes there are parts that don’t smell so fresh – I’m thinking of fields full of cattle or other livestock!”
Air Wick describes the scent as “fresh” and its “master perfumers” have clearly opted not to include a whiff of scrumpy or a dash of maturing silage.
Nonetheless, Richard does see the positive side of the deal.
“It is a little funny and odd,” he said, “but at the end of the day it’s publicising the park which can only be a good thing.
