UK (PRUnderground) May 22nd, 2013

The tough new Blue Flag measures are now in place and there have been 55 beaches in England that have met the new EU criteria. The Blue Flag award for beaches is a measure to ensure the quality of the beach and the water meets a required standard.

In the UK the Keep Britain Tidy group runs the campaign and although the number of beaches has fallen from just under 80 to 55 the requirements and standard needed is now much tougher than before. Some of the most highly awarded beaches in England include Thanet in Kent, beaches on the Isle of Wight, Bournemouth & Poole in Dorset and Torbay in Devon.

Some of the new stricter measures put in place to obtain the award included advising people on the quality of the water and real time information on any pollution from nearby water sewage and how this might affect the bathing quality. Some of the other areas that obtained the Blue Flag Award include the central beach in Skegness, Lowestoft in Suffolk, Martello Bay at Clacton-on-Sea in Essex and Whitby in North Yorkshire.

As well as these Blue Flag beaches there are also over 130 other beaches in England that have been awarded a Seaside Award by Keep Britain Tidy. This award is given on the rating of cleanliness of the beach. If you are looking for somewhere with the cleanest beaches in England then the Isle of Wight is the place to head to with 13 seaside awards having been obtained.

Richard McIlwain, Keep Britain Tidy operations director, said: “Holidaymakers and day trippers want to visit clean, safe beaches and the sight of the Blue Flag or Seaside Award flying gives them the reassurance that they will.”

So if you are considering taking some time out this year in the UK for a holiday, short break or weekend getaway then staying near a beach with a Blue Flag Award will ensure you and your family with have a clean and safe environment to stay in.

Chris Philips, Loveselfcatering marketing manager explained “Awards like the Blue Flag can really make a difference for a resort or seaside town especially when consumers are looking more and more towards quality. This type of award has an impact on the entire area helping attract more people to enjoy not only the beaches but the sights, attractions and services all around the area.”
